Llanfair Caereinion Football Club paid tribute to a legendary former player and club volunteer who died at the age of 56.

In a statement, Llanfair United FC described Andy McVeagh as a “highly respected” player and coach who was a “calm and friendly” “voice of reason” within the club.

The club added that they were devastated to learn of his passing.

“Andy was Llanfair from start to finish, representing so many teams in various sports and events over the years, nothing more than the football club, for which he played, coached, helped as a steward and supported for many years. many years, ”the statement said. .

“Andy was part of the Llanfair Wanderers, which were formed in 1989/90, to compete with Town’s already present team. Andy, along with a number of local youngsters, enjoyed playing against local teams in the amateur league. from Montgomeryshire for several years until Llanfair United was formed in 2001, when the two teams merged.

“Anyone who played with Andy or shared his company in the pub after the game will tell you how respected he was as a player or coach, so calm and friendly, always the voice of reason.”

Last month, the club’s game with Conwy Borough was postponed following news of Mr McVeagh’s death.

“Andy continued to play for United and the newly formed reserve squad, before turning to the first team coach, alongside Aled Haynes in 2008/2009,” they added.

Andy then started coaching his son Ryan’s junior team with Mark Bowen. A lot of those players now play for senior teams.

“Since Llanfair joined the Cymru Alliance, Andy has always been an on-the-door assistant or steward at home games or as an away fan, watching with pride as Ryan start playing for the men’s team. .

“The club could always count on Andy when he was called up, with so much going on over the years and his help and commitment will be sorely missed.

“Everyone at the club would like to send their sincere condolences to Edwina, Ryan and the whole family at this difficult time.”
