FIFA chief Gianni Infantino announces plans to create a soccer game to rival EA Sports
EA Sports will no longer produce the ‘FIFA’ video game series after announcing the end of its three-decade partnership with world football’s governing body
FIFA plans to create its own football video game after announcing the end of its three-decade partnership with EA Sports.
EA Sports has confirmed that FIFA 23 – the next installment in the franchise – will be the final video game in the series as we know it. The company has been making “FIFA” since 1993, when it released FIFA International Soccer on Sega Mega Drive.
Since then, “FIFA” has become the first football video game on the market. It was formerly known as “FIFA Football” until the 2004-05 edition of the game, but has gone by the shorter and more common name “FIFA” for the past 17 years.
EA Sports was also responsible for releasing “FIFA Street” – an arcade-style game that sees the best players in the world compete in five-a-side matches on concrete pitches. Four versions of this offshoot were released between 2005 and 2012.
Despite years of history, EA has announced that the franchise will be known as “EA Sports FC” starting in the 2023-24 season. “I want to start by thanking this incredible community of over 150 million fans for helping to build the biggest football entertainment platform in the world – EA Sports FIFA,” read a statement on Tuesday.
“After nearly 30 years of creating genre-defining interactive football experiences, we will soon begin an exciting new era. Next year, EA Sports FC will become the future of EA Sports football.

“Everything you love about our games will be part of EA SPORTS FC – the same experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs and athletes will be there. Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs and VOLTA Football will all be there.”
The main concern for fans of the franchise will be the lack of rights. One of the game’s biggest selling points over the past 30 years has been its massive library of professional footballers, clubs and leagues – something no other title has managed to rival.
Although EA Sports claims that its new title will offer “the same great experiences”, the game will no longer offer as many licenses as before. But fear not, as FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the governing body will be creating its own video game.
“I can assure you that the only real authentic game bearing the FIFA name will be the best available to gamers and football fans,” Infantino told reporters on Tuesday. That FIFA can create a quality game like EA will be their biggest challenge.
“The world of football and the world of entertainment are changing and they are colliding within our product,” EA Sports vice-president David Jackson told the BBC. “Going forward, our players will demand from us the ability to be more expansive in this offering. At the moment, we are committing to gaming as a primary form of interactive experience.
“Soon, watching and creating content is going to be just as important for fans. Under the licensing agreements we agreed to with FIFA 10 years ago, there were certain restrictions that wouldn’t allow us to build these experiences. . for gamers.”
