Luke Russell finished an excellent first season at Penguin winning the Tommy Kaine Medal for the club’s best and fairest senior player. The Two Blues assistant coach has polled in 12 of his 21 games to end the tally with 60 votes, far ahead of quadruple winner and top goaltender Jack Templeton (43 votes), with winger Jay Van Essen (37 votes) in third place. Julian Brown and Dusten O’Neil were tied for fourth place with another vote. The Penguin Best and Fairest Woman award saw Lila Wijesingha-Frohmader (36 votes) add to her successes in 2018 and 2019 with a nine-vote win over Joey Revell, Shania Saward a new vote in third. Despite only playing six games during the year, Sam Mawer returned home late to win the Reserve’s Best and Fairest trophy by a vote from Mitch Stanley. Mawer received 23 of 27 possible votes in the three finals to end with 35 votes. Damon Overton was third in 25 votes. It was one-way traffic among the Under-18s as Kody Bonner compiled an impressive 69 votes to win Lukas Burns by 37 votes, with Orin Ball another comeback vote in third. Votes were awarded on a 3-2-1 basis of three people after each match. On Friday night, Wynyard will close its best and fairest counts at its annual dinner with Devonport holding its best and fairest awards at the same time.
