Man arrested in the shooting death of a football player in Utah | Saint-Louis news headlines

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Police arrested a man early Sunday in connection with the shooting death of Utah sophomore cornerback Aaron Lowe.

Homicide detectives from the Salt Lake City Police Department located 22-year-old Buk M. Buk in Draper and charged him with aggravated murder, attempted murder and discharging a gun. Online prison records do not show whether he has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf.

“Because of the incredible work of our homicide detectives, we have justice for Aaron,” Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said at a press conference Sunday. “When I spoke to Aaron’s mother on Monday, I made her a promise. We would find her son’s alleged murderer.

Brown did not discuss the motive and declined to answer reporters’ questions. But he said the shooting was not a targeted attack on the university, its sports department or Lowe, or linked to a gang.

Lowe, 21, was gunned down at a house party just after midnight on September 26, after other uninvited guests were asked to leave, police said. A 20-year-old woman was also seriously injured by gunshot wounds during the party, which took place hours after the Utes beat Washington State 24-13.

Police had previously received complaints about the noise about the party, but officers did not respond as they were dealing with other emergency calls, police spokesman Brent Weisberg said. When dispatchers received a call about a gun fight over an hour later, officers immediately proceeded to the house in the Sugar House neighborhood.

Lowe’s death came less than a year after his teammate Ty Jordan was killed in an accidental shootout.

Lowe was a high school teammate with Jordan in Mesquite, TX, and changed his jersey from No.2 to No.22 to honor his friend after the 19-year-old died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen Christmas night 2020.

In August, Lowe was named the first recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship, voted on by the team.

The Utes credited Lowe with persuading Jordan to play in Utah after disengaging from school. Jordan was named Pac-12 freshman of the year and led all freshmen nationwide in rushing yards per game before being killed.

Lowe has appeared in 16 combined games on special teams in his first two seasons and has played four games this season.
