The Minstermen shared the points against Boreham Wood as they were held to a 1-1 draw at LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park.

City took the lead after just ten minutes through Lenell John-Lewis’ penalty, but they were pushed back by the home side five minutes into the second half thanks to a goal from former City player Jamal Fyfield.

In only the third meeting between the two teams, both entered the game looking for the crucial three points that would give them a good chance to stay intact with National League playoff positions.

The Minstermen were narrowly beaten by League 1 side Shrewsbury Town in the Emirates FA Cup at the weekend and John Askey was hoping his side could find their way back to winning ways as they travel to the capital.

In their path stood a Boreham Wood, who held the final position of the National League playoffs, who came into this game full of confidence after booking their place in the 2nd round of the Cup this weekend with a victory over Eastleigh.

Askey has named two changes to his starting XI from the one who played against Shrewsbury at the weekend. John-Lewis and Olly Dyson returned to the starting XI, replacing Maziar Kouhyar and Manny Duku, while there was a place on the bench for winger Alex Hurst who returned from suspension.

The home side had an immediate chance to take the lead within three minutes in north London after the ball fell into striker Danny Lewis’s feet inside the box after good work from Lee Ndlovu down the right, but a brilliant block from Michael Duckworth cleared the shot wide of goal and City slipped clear of danger.

City were awarded a tenth-minute penalty after Luke James was brought down inside the penalty area by Fyfield. Captain John-Lewis was on hand to bury his penalty in the bottom left corner to give the opposing side an early lead with his eighth goal of the season.

Ethan Ross came down fast to deny midfielder George Broadbent moments later after he ran on goal as his side looked for an equaliser, before James fired an effort from narrowly wide after a brilliant counter -Attack of the Minstermen.

Attacking midfielder Zak Brunt fired a long effort straight into Ross’s gloves which he could easily parry away from danger, before fullback Cameron Coxe tried his luck from long range with a cross shot, but his effort went well beyond the bar by far.

The home side leveled the game five minutes into the second half through Fyfield, who brought the ball in on the third attempt from close range after Danny Newton initially hit the post from the edge of the area on the half volley, before the rebound was perfectly blocked by Ross in the build-up.

Just two minutes after conceding, John-Lewis was found in central position after good work down the right from Ryan Fallowfield, but the striker curled his effort over the bar from close range as the Minstermen looked for a immediate response.

James had a low shot blocked from the edge of the box after breaking through the Boreham Wood defence, before Ross reacted quickly to overturn a long shot from Boreham Wood’s Dennon Lewis.

The home side continued to drive forward as they looked to take the lead but Michael Duckworth showed sheer strength as he put his body into play to deflect a ferocious strike from Ndlovu for a corner after a superb ball from the right .

York had a chance himself moments later as they searched for a second goal, as John-Lewis curled a long effort towards the goal, but his effort was easily saved by Boreham Wood keeper Nathan Ashmore.

Pybus came close with a volley from the edge of the area for the Minstermen, but he was unable to find a winner as York had to settle for a point north of London.

A final chance fell for the home side in added time in the second half, but Ross reacted smartly to deny substitute Josh Rees after firing into the corner well inside the penalty area.

York are back in action this weekend when they take on Altrincham as J Davidson Stadium in front of BT Sport cameras in the Vanarama National League (kick-off 5.20pm).
