Match Report: Rangers pick up three points against Hearts

RANGERS picked up three points in the Park’s Motor Group SWPL this afternoon with a 5-0 win over Hearts in Edinburgh.

Demi Vance put Rangers ahead in the opening 15 minutes before a brace from Jane Ross made it 3-0 at the break.

Lizzie Arnot added a fourth from the penalty spot in the second half before a superb strike from Chelsea Cornet completed the scoring.

Malky Thomson has named two changes to his squad since last weekend’s Cup game at Stenhousemuir as Chantelle Swaby and Brogan Hay entered the starting XI with Jodi McLeary and Emma Watson on the bench.

Rangers dominated the early stages at Oriam as they looked to find a breakthrough against the Edinburgh side.

The stalemate was broken in the 14th minute when left-back Demi Vance advanced down the wing before firing a ball towards goal which snuck past the near post.

It was two quick goals for the Light Blues who doubled their advantage just two minutes later. It was a well-worked goal from Malky Thomson’s side as Lizzie Arnot singled out Jane Ross in the box and the striker fired an effort forward Charlotte Parker-Smith.

Ross approached her second shortly after when she was alert to pick up a loose ball on the edge of the box and fired a left-footed shot through the goal, but it bounced just wide of target.

It was a third for Rangers in the 23rd minute as the Light Blues earned a free-kick on the edge of the box which was fired towards goal by Lizzie Arnot. Arnot’s effort was rebuffed by Parker-Smith but Jane Ross was on hand to tap home her second of the afternoon.

Demi Vance had a long-range shot cleared by Parker-Smith as Rangers continued to pressure the hosts before the break.

It was a quiet start to the second half as Malky Thomson made a double substitution in the 57th minute as Rangers looked to add more to their tally. Megan Bell made a welcome return, as young Kirsty Maclean also got in on the action with Brogan Hay and Chantelle Swaby retiring.

Captain Brianna Westrup forced a good save from Parker-Smith just after the hour mark as she took the lead after a corner from Lizzie Arnot, but the home goalkeeper got her hands on the effort to deny the Rangers.

Maria McAneny had a shot for the visitors from range as they looked to score a goal in the game, but her weak effort was comfortably held by Jenna Fife.

Rangers were awarded a 72nd-minute penalty as Megan Bell was fouled in the box. Lizzie Arnot approached the spot and calmly launched her right footed shot into the bottom corner.

Chelsea Cornet made it 5-0 with 10 minutes to go with a fantastic shot into the top corner from long range to beat Parker-Smith.
