Marshall County High School senior Braden Clough has played football for most of his life, and it has always been his sport. While shoulder injuries as a senior ultimately ended his playing days, Clough’s interest in sports medicine first surfaced after an ankle injury in college football .

“I remember in eighth grade it was the first time I seriously twisted my ankle – it popped and everything,” he said. “I had to wrap it up. … We were playing this game, but the next week, in training or whatever, it really fascinated me – I wanted to know what was hurting, why was it hurting and how could I fix it?

As Clough says, he would later delve into learning the mechanics of the human body, and it all really “clicked” with him. He is looking to study exercise science in college and will eventually become a sports doctor to help people.

“It really started with this little fascination and what really showed me that ‘Hey, I think this might be the right direction’ is that the more I learned about it the closer I got to it, c It didn’t make sense anymore and I just wanted to do it more, and so it really excites me and it makes sense to me,” he explained.

The 17-year-old recently said he was considering the University of Louisville or Western Kentucky University for college, and plans to make a decision soon.

Clough, son of Jon and Janella Clough of Benton, is Paducah Bank’s Teen of the Week.

Every Tuesday, The Sun publishes stories about area high school students who have been chosen from a pool of nominees for Teen of the Week recognition. Toward the end of the school year, a selection committee will nominate one of these students as Teen of the Year, who carries a $5,000 scholarship. Another student will receive the Inspiration Prize and a $1,000 scholarship.

In Marshall County, Clough earned a 4.30 grade point average. He is also an AP Scholar and attended the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program at Morehead State University last summer.

He has served on the school’s football team and track team, as well as Fellowship of Christian Athletes, HOSA, Young Americans for Freedom, and Interact Club.

He was manager of the boys’ basketball team during his senior year and teaches other students. He also worked as a pharmacy technician at a local pharmacy. A self-proclaimed “sneakerhead,” Clough launched his own company last fall, “Clough’s Kick Collective.” It cleans shoes and has also branched out into other services, such as shoe repair, painting and customization.

“You always hear coaches talk about ‘We want to win football games, obviously, but we want to make you better young men’ and that’s really what it did to me,” Clough said, about soccer.

He noted that he was “never the most naturally talented” on the pitch.

“The summer between eighth grade and first grade, I would get up at 5 a.m. every day in the summer to go practice because that’s how badly I wanted to, and what it gave me. learned is that nothing worth having will be easy,” he added.

Having suffered a shoulder injury as a senior, Clough shared that football also helped him learn to roll with the punches and make the most of an unexpected situation.

“I broke my shoulder twice, but I started a business that I love now. It’s all about mindset,” he said.

Graduating from high school isn’t far off, and Clough is currently focused on enjoying her senior year, “absorbing it and living in the moment.” He is also trying to prepare for his future in college and build that next step for himself.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — U.S. Military Academy and fire officials said Friday that at least two of the school’s cadets, including a football player, were involved in a situation in which six people overdosed on cocaine containing fentanyl while vacationing in Florida. home on spring break.

Two of the six people were in critical condition, relief and emergency officials said. A West Point official told The Associated Press that one of the hospitalized cadets was an Army football player. The official said another football player in the house was not hospitalized. The official had no other information and could not give the player’s condition. No name has been released. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing investigation.

The New York Academy’s public affairs office released a statement Friday afternoon saying its officials are “aware of the situation involving the West Point cadets, which occurred Thursday evening in the Wilton community. manor”.

He added that “no further details are available at this time”. The South Florida Sun Sentinel first reported that some of the victims were West Point cadets.

Four of the students overdosed after ingesting fentanyl-containing cocaine because friends who performed CPR were also exposed to fentanyl.

On Friday afternoon, Fort Lauderdale Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Steve Gollan told the AP that two critically ill victims were on ventilators. Two other victims were in stable condition, one was in good condition and one was released.

Gollan said earlier that after two victims collapsed on Thursday, two others fell ill trying to give them CPR from the residue on their bodies. When paramedics arrived, six people at home needed treatment. He said naloxone, an anti-opioid overdose drug, was administered. Neighbors told local media that the house was an often-rented vacation home.

Fentanyl is an unpredictable and potent synthetic painkiller blamed for leading to an increase in fatal drug overdoses. It’s 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine and used to treat severe pain, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It also slows down a person’s breathing and heart rate.

Gollan said that in the 70 days since Jan. 1, his department has responded to 215 suspected opioid overdoses; nearly all involved fentanyl. He didn’t know how many had died, but said it was a two-year trend that started when the coronavirus pandemic started and hasn’t abated.

Army
West Point officials said they are still investigating the incident, as some of the students are believed to have been on the academy’s football team.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said its detectives are investigating with Wilton Manors police. A spokesperson said no further details could be released due to the ongoing investigation.

Vice-Principal Kaleb Stoppel and School Resource Manager Erik Clark were injured in Friday’s shooting.

Authorities have identified the student who opened fire at a Kansas high school on Friday as a senior and a member of the school’s varsity football team.

Jaylon Desean Elmore, 18, remains hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by a school resource officer, KMBC reports.

Elmore, who was charged with attempted capital murder, injured the officer and an administrator at Olanthe East High School. They were discharged from hospital on Friday, as CrimeOnline previously reported.

According to KMBC, the incident occurred when the administrator learned that Elmore had a gun in his backpack and removed the student from the class. When Elmore refused to open the backpack, the administrator called the officer, who was identified as Erik Clark.

When Clark arrived, Elmore opened fire and Clark returned fire.

State Senator Cindy Holscher identified the injured administrator as assistant principal Kaleb Stoppel, who is also the school’s athletic director, according to the Kansas City Star. The Star reported that this was to be Stoppel’s final year at Olanthe East. He was slated to become Wichita Public School’s athletic director beginning in July.

Clark had been a school resource officer for seven years and a police officer for 15, KMBC said.

According to WDAF, Elmore is being held on a $1 million bond. Court documents say he will be under house arrest with GPS monitoring if released on bail and must not come within 100 yards of the victims’ residence or school, cannot use illegal drugs or controlled substances and must submit to testing as directed by the court. He is also prohibited from alcohol, firearms or contact with victims or witnesses, whether or not he posts bail.

TWO years ago, Daryl Branagan was the man to win Ulster’s Best Club Footballer award, as Kilcoo looked to the future to see if they could add All-Ireland glory to their wardrobe with domed trophies.
“You can sometimes be a little criticized, I was told that I was not the best player in the house,” he joked as he picked up the trophy.

His brother Eugene was named to that year’s All-Star football team. The man in tights eventually helped the Magpies climb the mountain and win the Andy Merrigan Cup.
The Gaelic Life All-Stars night will be a night of celebration for the Down and Steelstown pivots who backed their Derry and Ulster titles with All-Ireland success in dominating fashion.
Cahir McMonagle kicked in for fun in an Owenbeg monsoon as Steelstown issued a formidable challenge to Moortown, with Diarmuid Baker running relentlessly to link the game.
Denn had Cavell Keogan as his attacking backbone as they took Ulster honors at junior level.

Conor Glass and Tiernan Kelly helped their clubs to senior glory with consistent performances in Ulster. Jerome Johnston’s goal against Glen was the defining moment of Ulster’s Senior Championship. Micéal Rooney’s final clearance at Croke Park ensuring Kilmacud Crokes didn’t put out Kilcoo’s lights before Johnston’s extra-time winning goal. Then you have Niall ‘Bobo’ Kane’s goal (he claims it) which brought Kilcoo back into the game.

Derrygonnelly was one of Ulster’s stories but once Kilcoo kicked into high gear in the final the woting was on the wall. Ryan Jones was their mainstay of midfield consistency, with Eamonn McHugh their key scorer with his role on Niall Sludden at the center of their extra-time win over Dromore. Kevin Cassidy (2018), Karl McKaigue (2017) and Brendan Rogers (2016) were the three players of the year ahead of Daryl Branagan to annex this prestigious award. The Gaelic Life judging panel will sift through the performances of the 15 players to see who will win the All-Sports Footballer of the Year award for 2021. It’s no easy task.

KATY, Texas (KTRK) — Two school board administrators were publicly reprimanded Thursday night during a special Katy ISD school board session.

The meeting sparked divisiveness among members, following the release of the findings of an independent investigation by an outside law firm.

“If I was an employee, I would be fired immediately,” trustee Lance Redmon said.

“What you hear tonight is their effort to silence you and me,” administrator Dawn Champagne told a group of supporters in attendance.

This all comes from former Katy High School quarterback Bronson McClelland. In 2019, McClelland was disciplined for using the N-word in a video posted online.

He and his family have publicly apologized.

“I’m not trying to justify my use of the word. I shouldn’t use the word. I haven’t used the word since then,” the teen previously told ABC13.

But he says Katy ISD’s public discipline has cost him scholarships and other opportunities. A year later, during his senior season at Katy High School, he was kicked off the team when Katy ISD said marijuana was found in his car.

His family says it was a product similar to CBD oil. The McClellands have filed several lawsuits, criminal and civil, against the district and the administrators of Katy High School.

And throughout those legal battles, school board chairman Greg Schulte said two trustees, Champagne and Leah Wilson, had inappropriate communication with the football player‘s father, Colburn.

“Laws and ethical standards have definitely been violated,” administrator Ashley Vann said.

In November 2021, the school board engaged an independent law firm to investigate potential communications between board members and complainants, which were not disclosed to Katy ISD’s General Counsel.

The law firm’s findings indicate that Champagne “believed that engaging in ongoing communication with CM would improve her chances of being re-elected and moving into a leadership role on the board.”

But at the school board meeting, Champagne hit back, saying, “It’s an ongoing effort to diminish my community involvement and prevent me from understanding the issues from your perspective.”

“They don’t want me to argue with people who don’t agree with them,” she said.

The findings also accuse trustee Leah Wilson of receiving emails and text messages from Colburn. Outside attorneys say the two women may have violated the law prohibiting the destruction of public information.

They are accused of deleting text messages and emails from Colburn McClelland on their personal devices. But after spending around $30,000 and more than four months on the investigation, at least one administrator has come out critical.

“This process has been a diversion from what we’re supposed to do, take care of children,” Rebecca Fox said.

Champagne was stripped of her role as council secretary after the council voted to reassign that role. Duke Keller was named the new secretary.

Wilson declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Katy ISD said it was unclear whether the council would pursue a criminal investigation.

The attorney representing the McClelland family, Keith Donati, sent the following statement:

KISD has a habit of hiding behind its government immunity and an unlimited budget. Apparently a few board members disagreed with their mishandling of my clients’ case, took a stand and opposed the administration of KISD. As a result, two of these board members were retaliated against at last night’s meeting. My clients are a strong and courageous family and appreciate board members who are willing to take a stand against lies and injustice. We are currently involved in litigation in federal and state courts. As the depositions of the KISD defendants are completed, which will be recorded on audio and video, we will be happy to make them available to the media and the general public. The misbehavior of some KISD administrators will be obvious to all. We remain confident that when all the facts come to light, the public will finally have a clear idea of how far KISD will go to protect themselves from unlawful and inappropriate treatment of a student.

When reached by phone, Bronson McClelland’s mother, Angie McClelland, said her son is “doing the best he can with the hand he’s been dealt”. She told ABC13 he thrives at a University of Texas where he’s captain of the football team and on the Dean’s Honor List. She declined to say where Bronson McClelland is currently registered.

JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania – Even off the ice, Maverick Baker had a knack for leading the Johnstown Warriors traveling hockey team, his longtime coach Chris Glessner said.

Midway through a championship three years ago, Baker’s teammates found themselves anxious and uncomfortable in a Detroit locker room moments before facing a formidable foe, Glessner recalled.

“At one point the stage seemed too big for them, Maverick stood up, and I thought he was going to make a speech. But instead he started dancing – skates, his hair flying and a big smile Glessner said, “Within seconds the tension was gone. Everyone was nodding, singing along with him.”

Then, Glessner recalled, “he goes out and scores a hat trick to win it.”

It’s memories like this that the sporting communities of Johnstown and North Cambria clung to on Saturday after the 16-year-old’s sudden death.

Baker was a Northern Cambria High School football and baseball player who also skated for the Bishop McCort Catholic and Johnstown Warriors hockey teams.

Crimson Crushers coach John Bradley was among many area hockey coaches and programs who paid tribute to Baker on social media. Bradley’s post featured a collage of photos of the teenager in his No.88 shirt and the words ‘We will miss you’.

The Northern Cambria football team shared an image on social media of Baker taking a transfer for a win around a pursuit player from Meyersdale last fall.

Northern Cambria football coach Sam Shutty said he first met Baker when the teenager was in eighth grade. His “unforgettable smile”, selfless attitude and drive to succeed were unmistakable, Shutty said.

On the field last fall, the sneaky running back earned regular playing time for the Colts as a sophomore.

“But you could tell he wanted more,” Shutty said, recalling how Baker always found a way to make time in the weight room, even logging ice time each week for two hockey teams.

“He was successful in everything he did, and he will be truly missed,” Shutty said.

Prior to Saturday’s game against the Maine Nordiques at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, the Johnstown Tomahawks held a moment of silence for Baker and Joe Letizia, the father of Johnstown Tomahawks coach Mike Letizia, who died on January 19. A video tribute was played for Baker.

“Please join us in sending our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Shell and Baker families,” the NAHL club wrote in a Facebook tribute. “RIP 88.”

Glessner, who said he’s known Baker since he was 6, said his teammates and the local hockey community are “heartbroken” by Baker’s passing.

Glessner hosted a team breakfast on Saturday morning to allow players and coaches to grieve and share memories.

Officials at Northern Cambria Catholic School and Bishop McCort also contacted pupils to let them know support was available.

“You never expect to lose someone that young,” said Shutty, who met his team at a restaurant on Saturday to speak to them during the “tragic” moment. “Right now it’s about letting these kids know that we’re all here for each other.”

THE 27-YEAR-OLD FOUNDER COMBINES A LONG COMPETITIVE ATHLETIC CAREER, SOLID ACADEMIC DEGREES AND EXPERTISE IN WEALTH MANAGEMENT

My job is to help maximize my clients’ time and compensation playing professional sports, and to invest wisely so that they are financially prepared for decades to come.

—Trae Smith

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, Feb. 4, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Trae Smith, a former college football player turned business and career advisor with an undergraduate degree in international development from UCLA and a MBA from Pepperdine University, launched a talent agency for world-class athletes. The Powerhaus agency will be based in Los Angeles.

Initially focusing on football players, Smith believes the combination of his personal high-level playing experience, business education, wealth management experience and real estate license puts him in a unique position to guide players, not just when they’re playing the game, but for the rest of their lives.

“Most people might be surprised to learn that the average seniority for a player in the NFL is only 3.3 years,” Smith explained. “My job is to help maximize my clients’ time and compensation playing professional sports, and to invest wisely so that they are financially prepared for decades to come.”

Smith, a Los Angeles resident who served as both a quarterback and wide receiver for the NCAA’s UCLA while also being on the athletic director’s honor roll, launched his own football career at Birmingham High School, a charter high school in Lake Balboa, where he was named an offensive player. of the year.

Similar to unstoppable Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Smith was also a baseball player before focusing on football and caught the eye of local scouts while coaching his local community college team before moving on. go up to the University of California at Los Angeles. Instead of following Mahomes into the NFL, Smith decided his background, experience and personality were better suited for mentorship and advocacy in the game he loves.

“I think it’s a huge competitive advantage to have played this game because I can immediately empathize with my clients while helping them focus on the big picture, including philanthropy,” Smith said. .

The leadership skills required of an agent are nothing new to Smith, who while at Santa Monica Community College not only led his football team to its first undefeated season in 35 years, but also found the time to start “Generation of the Future”, a group of university students focused on organizing educational and fitness events for underprivileged youth from kindergarten through eighth grade.

For this group, the business-minded Smith was savvy enough to strike partnerships with UNICEF, Nike, Domino’s Pizza and the Boys and Girls Club, and was able to increase membership by more than 500% in three months. and the organization’s financial reserves by 300%. before moving to UCLA. To date, Smith remains a consultant with Generation of the Future and has also volunteered with the Westside Children’s Center, Reading to Kids, Special Olympics, and The Midnight Mission shelter for the homeless.

Prior to launching PowerHaus Agency, Smith also had ongoing relationships with Morgan Stanley for wealth management, brokerage firm Compass for real estate investing, his alma maters from UCLA and Pepperdine, and the Sigma Pi fraternity, where Smith was president of his pledge class. Smith believes this holistic approach to a player’s life, both on and off the pitch, is what will allow Powerhaus to succeed.

“Anyone in life could use a mentor, especially someone who has experienced the same challenges of a fledgling athletic career,” Smith concludes. “My job is to help my clients realize their dreams and plan for the future while giving back to their communities.”

THE name and colors of a historic County Durham football team that holds the record for the biggest FA Cup wins are back in action for the first time since the 1990s.

Ferryhill Athletic Football Club has been resurrected after a hiatus of around 15 years.

The side, which faced Wheatley Hill in their first match on Saturday using the former club’s name and colours, played as Durham Football Club in Wearside Second Division.

Coach Paul Gillham, who works alongside Jonathan Kelly and Lee Jewett, said: “We’re Ferryhill lads so that means a lot to us.

“It’s a football village. We had a Northern League club for 60 or 70 years. The history of this club is incredible.

“It was disappointing for the whole village when it folded. We need a club with a senior team on a Saturday that people can follow.”

The team were struggling to find a venue to play in Durham and with many players from the Ferryhill area it was decided to move to Dean Bank Recreation Ground and resurrect the old club.

They are back in the Ferryhill colors of amber and black, although on Saturday the Wheatley Hill side appeared in black and yellow which caused the home side to change shirts mid-game.

The original club formed in 1921 and the current side changed their name at the end of last year – in what would have been their centenary.

And they hope to return to the Northern League soon.

Echo of the North:

Fraser Reynolds, club secretary, said: “We plan to grow the club back to that level. We have the ambition to be a Northern League side again.

“It’s a new club and we’re starting at a low level. It will take a few years to get where we want to be. It’s a very young team with some experienced players.”

“We don’t have the minute facilities to get into the Northern League, but that’s the long-term goal.”

They had a tough first game as Ferryhill Athletic, losing 5-1 to Wheatley Hill

Ferryhill Mayor Dave Farry said the council was right behind the team. He is trying to get a 4G pitch and is offering the club free use of the recreation pitch.

Cllr Farry said: “The idea is to bring the community together and put Ferryhill back on the map.”

The former workers’ club – now called Ferryhill community and sports and social club – is also joining the team and has renamed its bar the Athletic Bar, in the colors of Ferryhill.

Echo of the North:

They are also appealing to anyone with memorabilia they would like to donate to get in touch to help with an exhibit in the bar.

“Old programs, scarves, tapes, photographs – anything like that,” Cllr Farry said.

Ferryhill Athletic hold the record for the biggest FA Cup win – beating Skinningrove Works 18-0 in the 1954 competition.

The club, which have won the Northern League three times, played at their Darlington Road ground until 1994.

Sedgefield MP Paul Howell, who is from the village and remembers going to see Ferryhill Athletic as a youngster, turned up to watch the kick-off. He said: “It’s a pleasure to see them back on a football ground as Ferryhill.”
