The Rose Bowl will host the D1 South Section Championship Football Game

The Rose Bowl is opening its stadium to host the 2022 Southern Section Division 1 High School Football Championship Game. It will be played Friday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first time in 78 years that a final of the South Section will take place at the Rose Bowl.

“It’s going to be a big event,” said Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod.

It took two years of negotiations and brainstorming to form what Wigod says is “a true partnership” with the Rose Bowl.

This coincides with the Rose Bowl celebrating its 100th anniversary, the announcement of the California High School Football Hall of Fame’s inaugural class, and the unveiling of the Hall of Fame’s new facility at the Rose Bowl.

Parking will cost $10, and suites and club seats are expected to be made available. A special terrain decoration will be created. Bally Sports will broadcast the match on television.

This is a major upgrade for the Southern Section, which hosted last season’s finale at Long Beach City College due to COVID-19 restrictions. Previous league games in recent years have been played at Cerritos College.

Last year’s final between Santa Ana Mater Dei and Anaheim Servite sold out some 9,600 tickets faster than any event since a basketball semifinal was held at Galen Center in USC in 2017.

St. John Bosco and Mater Dei are favorites to reach this fall’s final.
