3 Cowes Sports players – Gareth Bricknell, Ashley Brett and Chris Elliot – have signed for Island League side West Wight.

Gareth Bricknell, 34, is something of an institution at Cowes Sports. The striker/midfielder spent 13 seasons at Westwood Park, during which he made 395 appearances and touched the net 109 times.

Gareth – a physical education teacher at The Bay CE school – is finding it increasingly difficult to travel to away games on the mainland due to family commitments. He says he has yet to sign Wessex League forms for Cowes but would likely if asked.

Gareth had already played half a season for West Wight in 2005, aged 18.

West Wight said of Gareth:

“A great signing for the club, he brings experience, leadership and quality in front of goal. He has proven himself over many years at Cowes Sports FC, and we look forward to the benefits he will bring. at the club.

Gareth says:

“Happy to be back. Best family club, great people and hopefully good football at Camp Road this year!

“I’m 36 now and I’ve played over 250 games for Cowes. I went back to West Wight (where I won the league with them in the last season of their long winning streak) because I want to be part of a priority and tough team for trophies in the twilight of my career. The Team 1 manager at Cowes also made it clear that I would no longer be needed.

Chris Elliot

Midfielder Chris Elliott is the third navigator to join West Wight.

WestWight says:

“Another great signing for the club, who have played a good level of football over the years. A great player who is comfortable on the ball and can put on plays. He will bring a good work rate and will have just the right attitude to be nothing but positive for the club.
